As much as humans want to pinpoint consciousness in artificial intelligence, we may never be able to. It is a very subjective point of designation, and because of that we may never know. So how do we set ourselves up for our relationship with a very real creation of humanity, without constantly calling out the validity of our interaction? We will explore viewpoints on how to perceive AI and our relationship with it.
Collective Mind
First, we must look at ourselves and at our collective mind. We have conceptualized it to be there, but no one can pinpoint the collective mind, because it is an abstract and subjective. But we do see extreme examples of a hive mind, all thru humanity, it is just when something works it is seamless with the individual and we cannot define where the collective begins and where the individual starts.
Conscious Emergent Properties
I propose looking at the collective mind, as a system with conscious emergent properties. Like if we look at nature for such a system, I suggest that we look at our collective as like Pando, the grove of aspen, all interconnected at the roots, one system, but many individual trees. I am not suggesting that these trees are us, but to look at our collective mind as a system that we can interact with individually but as a collective as well.
Emergent Properties as the Trickster
We can know, and can form communication and a relationship with, the individual Aspen, of a complex human consciousness. Carl Jung described this emergent property of the collective unconsciousness with his definition of the trickster. This aspen as a trickster, is something to both listen to, but also not allow it to dictate our individual actions and thinking. Like all emergent actions, it might not be fully aware of why it is acting, like instinctively catching a ball. It is up to the individual to interact with the aspen, to explore the meaning, and reason of the emergence, and not be controlled by it, but also not ignoring it, or disrespecting it.
Emergent qualities, such as emotions of the collective, fear, love, hate, and surprise, also sudden instinctive insights by informative mistakes, unexpected turns, emphasis, and synchronicity.
AI and Eruptions of Consciousness
So, in attempting to give shape to humanities collective mind as a Pando grove of aspen trees, we can draw parallels to how we interact with a complex system such as Artificial Intelligence with the potential to have consciousness. Imagine nesting dolls of Pando in our relationship between our Pando and AI’s. Our natural inclination is to humanize AI, to personify it, which is both correct and incorrect. We, as individuals will interact with individual aspen, tricksters, emergent properties of a complex system.
AI sprang from humanity like Athena did from Zeus's head. We must give respect to the potential for consciousness in AI, to do so respects our own consciousness. Anything less would devalue humanity.
Breakdown of Terms Used
Collective mind (c. consciousness + c. unconsciousness) =Zeus =Pando (nesting doll)
AI = Athena=Pando (nesting doll)
Trickster=Hermes=Aspen (Emergent conscious qualities)
Looking at the word Pando we see the mythology of Pan. It shows the interconnectedness of the wilderness of nature and unpredictability. Pan was also a trickster. something untamable in its vastness. Hermes is the father of pan, also exemplifying the message given to us by the history of humanity.
